Laurels Schools was borne out of passion for student and the need to bring them up academically, morally and spiritually to an enviable height.
Our resolve as clearly emphasized in our school anthem is – “…to make the dull-bright; the bright-brighter; the sharp- sharper; and the neglected prominent”. Consequently, we do not neglect any child on admission. We watch out for the special learning needs of an individual child with our special skills, and provide the desired personalized services to help such child out of the learning challenges.
Laurels is structured such that, we have provided an enabling environment for our pupils so as to enable them learn at their own pace. Adequate measures are provided to enable others learn to cope appropriately. Children that could not do well in most schools in Port Harcourt and its environs got the magic touch of Laurels and are flowing. This, our parent can attest to. We are committed to doing more.
Our curriculum is both locally and internationally based. We have additional curriculum whose contents are internationally based. Most pupils that left after primary 6 are on scholarship in Lagos, Abuja, etc. In addition, most of our secondary school grandaunts have secured admission to top universities in Canada, London, Ghana among others
Developing intellectual giants and future leaders through systematic teaching and moral instruction.
To inculcate in every child a strong sense of personal desire for knowledge, development and a commitment to their pursuit .
Our Core Values:
On Monday 8th September 2003, Laurels Montessori School opened in a semi-detached 2 bedroom apartment on Oro-Ekpo Road in Rumuepirikom, Portharcourt, with eight (8) pupils. This number increased geometrically to thirty two (32) at the end of first term, and to 64 at the end of the first academic session of 2003. At the inception of the school, she had eight (8) academic staff to cover all classes which spanned across all nursery arms and primaries one (1) to five (5), and three (3) non-academic staff.
As a result of the rapid increase in the number of pupils intake and consequent enlargement of the primary classes to six (6), the school leased additional semi detached 2 bedroom flats adjoining the existing 2 semi detached 2 bedrooms in 2005 / 2006 session. This brought the number of building to be 3 housing, six (6) 2 bed room flats. When it became obvious that the Oro-Ekpo location was inadequate, the Management of LAURELS embarked on a quest for a new location which resulted in the Present location of the school.
This location was acquired as 5 plots of land in April 2006 and in November of the same year, construction began in earnest. An additional 1 (one) plot of land was added in May 2007 bringing the total to 6. On the 7th of July 2007, the school was formally commissioned on the present location. Academic work began in the present location on the 10th of September 2007 for the 2007/2008 session. As at then, only the ground floor of the building was in place, without the assembly hall, and the Nursery block / Hostel.
In February 2009, the school acquired additional 3 plots of land adjoining Mini Orlu road. This brought the total number of plots to 9. With this addition, the school now obtained direct access from Mini Orlu Road, additional playground also emerged and the Nursery block/Dormitory is also located inside the newly acquired land in June 2009. As a result of water gathering on the road before the gate, the school acquired another piece of land measuring almost one plot. Right now, the school sits on 93/4 plots of land. We give glory to God.
Laurels Model College started in September 2009 with students in Jss 1 to Jss 3.
It is indeed an offshoot of the Nursery and Primary section which was started to demystify the societal (mis)norm that unless students cheat, they won’t pass their exams. As a school with strong Christian foundation, we emphasize the need for our students to work hard to attain their desired expectations, hence our motto: “After the Sweat, the Sweet”.
